What is refractive error?

Refractive error is the refractive state of the eyes. It includes nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and anisometropia.

It is often said that the eyes are the “camera” of the human body. When we use the camera to shoot objects at different distances, we need to focus through the lens to take a clear picture. Eyes are the same as a camera. It is also necessary for the eyes to adjust the focus (through the lens) to see the objects clearly at different distance.

If the light cannot be accurately focused on the retina, the image of the objects on the retina will be blurred. Such eyes are not emmetropic, or called refractive errors.

Different types of refractive errors:

Myopia: Light is focused in front of the retina, which causes blurry distance vision;

Hyperopia:  Light is focused behind the retina, which causes both blurred distance and near vision, especially the latter is more obvious.  

Astigmatism:  The eye does not focus light evenly on the retina, which results in distorted or blurred vision at all distances.

Anisometropia: The two eyes have unequal refractive power, which shows both eyes have different types of anisometropia, or the same types of anisometropia but different refractive power;

Presbyopia: It is often classified as a special type of refractive error and usually have difficulties in reading at short range.
